    Large-area inventory of species composition using airborne laser scanning and hyperspectral data

    5openInternationalInternational coauthor/editorTree species composition is an essential attribute in stand-level forest management inventories and remotely sensed data might be useful for its estimation. Previous studies on this topic have had several operational drawbacks, e.g., performance studied at a small scale and at a single tree-level with large fieldwork costs. The current study presents the results from a large-area inventory providing species composition following an operational area-based approach. The study utilizes a combination of airborne laser scanning and hyperspectral data and 97 field sample plots of 250 m2 collected over 350 km2 of productive forest in Norway. The results show that, with the availability of hyperspectral data, species-specific volume proportions can be provided in operational forest management inventories with acceptable results in 90% of the cases at the plot level. Dominant species were classified with an overall accuracy of 91% and a kappa-value of 0.73. Species-specific volumes were estimated with relative root mean square differences of 34%, 87%, and 102% for Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), and deciduous species, respectively. Under design-based and model-assisted inferential frameworks, the estimation relies on a model that relates the auxiliary ALS metrics to AGB estimated on ground plots. The size of the field plots has been identified as one source of model uncertainty because of the so-called boundary effects which increases with decreasing plot size. Recent re- search in tropical forests has aimed to quantify the boundary effects on model prediction accuracy, but evidence of the consequences for the final AGB estimates is lacking. In this study we analyzed the effect of field plot size on model prediction accuracy and its implication when used in a model-assisted inferential framework. Results: The results showed that the prediction accuracy of the model improved as the plot size increased. The adjusted R 2 increased from 0.35 to 0.74 while the relative root mean square error decreased from 63.6 to 29.2%. Indicators of boundary effects were identified and confirmed to have significant effects on the model residuals. Variance estimates of model-assisted mean AGB relative to corresponding variance estimates of pure field-based AGB, decreased with increasing plot size in the range from 200 to 3000 m 2 . The variance ratio of field-based esti- mates relative to model-assisted variance ranged from 1.7 to 7.7. Conclusions: This study showed that the relative improvement in precision of AGB estimation when increasing field-plot size, was greater for an ALS-assisted inventory compared to that of a pure field-based inventory

    Behavioural effects of seismic dose escalation exposure on captive mackerel (Scomber scombrus)

    Petroleum and fisheries are two of the most important industries in Norway, and the goal for management is sustainable coexistence for both. Mackerel is an important pelagic fishery resource, and mackerel can very well detect the seismic sound signals. The aim of this project was to investigate the behavioural responses of mackerel to seismic signals, and to evaluate potential responses in terms of affecting the fishery. Wild captured mackerel in a net pen was exposed to escalating seismic signals from an approaching source vessel, while behaviour was constantly monitored with video and echosounder, as well as the sound pressure level and particle motion level recorded with hydrophone and particle motion sensor, respectively. Fish behavior was analyzed in terms of swimming speed, vertical distribution, schooling and group dynamic. We aimed at conducting a dose escalation to identify the sound level at which a response is initiated. No clear responses were identified in response to the sound exposure. In addition, behavioural responses of farmed salmon and rainbow trout was monitored by video surveillance at three close-by aquaculture farms to avoid any potential harmful effects on the farmed fish. However, no behavioural responses in terms of swimming dynamic, swimming speed and collective behavior were observed from these videos .publishedVersio

    Magnetic Susceptibility: Solutions, Emulsions, and Cells

    Differences in magnetic susceptibility between various compartments in heterogeneous samples can introduce unanticipated complications to NMR spectra. On the other hand, an understanding of these effects at the level of the underlying physical principles has led to the development of several experimental techniques that provide data on cellular function that are unique to NMR spectroscopy. To illustrate some key features of susceptibility effects we present, among a more general overview, results obtained with red blood cells and a recently described model system involving diethyl phthalate in water. This substance forms a relatively stable emulsion in water and yet it has a significant solubility of 5 mmol/L at room temperature; thus, the NMR spectrum has twice as many resonances as would be expected for a simple solution. What determines the relative intensities of the two families of peaks and can their frequencies be manipulated experimentally in a predictable way? The theory used to interpret the NMR spectra from the model system and cells was first developed in the context of electrostatics nearly a century ago, and yet some of its underlying assumptions now warrant closer scrutiny.     Serum MASP-1 in complex with MBL activates endothelial cells.

    The complement system plays an important role in the induction of inflammation. In this study we demonstrate that the initiation complexes of the lectin pathway, consisting of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and associated serine proteases (MASPs) elicit Ca2+ signaling in cultured endothelial cells (HUVECs). This is in agreement with our previous results showing that the recombinant catalytic fragment of MASP-1 activates endothelial cells by cleaving protease activated receptor 4. Two other proteases, MASP-2 and MASP-3 are also associated with MBL. Earlier we showed that recombinant catalytic fragment of MASP-2 cannot activate HUVECs, and in this study we demonstrate that the same fragment of MASP-3 has also no effect. We find the same to be the case if we use recombinant forms of the N-terminal parts of MASP-1 and MASP-2 which only contain non-enzymatic domains. Moreover, stable zymogen mutant form of MASP-1 was also ineffective to stimulate endothelial cells, which suggests that in vivo MASP-1 have the ability to activate endothelial cells directly as well as to activate the lectin pathway simultaneously. We show that among the components of the MBL-MASPs complexes only MASP-1 is able to trigger response in HUVECs and the proteolytic activity of MASP-1 is essential.     Narcissism and the strategic pursuit of short-term mating : universal links across 11 world regions of the International Sexuality Description Project-2.

    Previous studies have documented links between sub-clinical narcissism and the active pursuit of short-term mating strategies (e.g., unrestricted sociosexuality, marital infidelity, mate poaching). Nearly all of these investigations have relied solely on samples from Western cultures. In the current study, responses from a cross-cultural survey of 30,470 people across 53 nations spanning 11 world regions (North America, Central/South America, Northern Europe, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, Middle East, Africa, Oceania, Southeast Asia, and East Asia) were used to evaluate whether narcissism (as measured by the Narcissistic Personality Inventory; NPI) was universally associated with short-term mating. Results revealed narcissism scores (including two broad factors and seven traditional facets as measured by the NPI) were functionally equivalent across cultures, reliably associating with key sexual outcomes (e.g., more active pursuit of short-term mating, intimate partner violence, and sexual aggression) and sex-related personality traits (e.g., higher extraversion and openness to experience). Whereas some features of personality (e.g., subjective well-being) were universally associated with socially adaptive facets of Narcissism (e.g., self-sufficiency), most indicators of short-term mating (e.g., unrestricted sociosexuality and marital infidelity) were universally associated with the socially maladaptive facets of narcissism (e.g., exploitativeness). Discussion addresses limitations of these cross-culturally universal findings and presents suggestions for future research into revealing the precise psychological features of narcissism that facilitate the strategic pursuit of short-term mating

    Estimering av biomasse i tropisk regnskog ved bruk av flybåren laserskanning

    Forest inventories based on field sample surveys, supported by auxiliary remotely sensed data, have the potential to provide transparent and confident estimates of forest carbon stocks required in climate change mitigation schemes such as the REDD+ mechanism. Threedimensional (3D) information about the density and height of the vegetation, obtained from remotely sensed data, is particularly useful for providing accurate estimates of forest biomass. Most of the research on biomass estimation supported by 3D remotely sensed data has been carried out in boreal and sub-boreal coniferous forests with relatively low biomass quantities and open forest structure. The studies comprising the present thesis were conducted in a dense tropical forest with challenging topography. In the present thesis two different techniques of collecting remotely sensed 3D data were used: airborne laser scanner (ALS) and spaceborne interferometric synthetic aperture radio detection and ranging (InSAR). While the main focus was on the use of ALS, the high quality digital terrain model (DTM) derived from the ALS data also facilitated the comparison of InSAR data as auxiliary information in biomass estimation.Fjernmålte data brukt sammen med feltobservasjoner, kan potensielt gi grunnlag for troverdige estimat av karbonet som er lagret i skogens biomasse. Informasjon om lagret biomasse er nødvendig for arbeidet med å motvirke klimaendringer. REDD+ er system hvor denne kunnskapen er avgjørende. Fjernmålt 3D-informasjon om skogens høyde og tetthet er særlig nyttig fordi den gir nøyaktige estimat på skogens biomasse. Tidligere forskning på bruk av fjernmålt 3D-data til biomasseestimering har hovedsakelig blitt gjort i boreal og sub-boreal barskog med relativt lav biomasse og åpen skogstruktur. Studiene i denne avhandlingen ble utført i tett tropisk skog med utfordrende terrengforhold. To ulike metoder for fjernmåling av 3D-data ble benyttet: flybåren laserskanning (ALS) og satellittbåren interferometrisk syntetisk apertur-radar (InSAR). Hovedfokuset for avhandlingen var på bruk av ALS. I tillegg ga en digital terrengmodell av høy kvalitet, produsert med ALS-dataene, muligheter for en sammenligning med bruk av InSAR-data til biomasseestimering

    Countering Negative Effects of Terrain Slope on Airborne Laser Scanner Data Using Procrustean Transformation and Histogram Matching

    Forest attributes such as tree heights, diameter distribution, volumes, and biomass can be modeled utilizing the relationship between remotely sensed metrics as predictor variables, and measurements of forest attributes on the ground. The quality of the models relies on the actual relationship between the forest attributes and the remotely sensed metrics. The processing of airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds acquired under heterogeneous terrain conditions introduces a distortion of the three-dimensional shape and structure of the ALS data for tree crowns and thus errors in the derived metrics. In the present study, Procrustean transformation and histogram matching were proposed as a means of countering the distortion of the ALS data. The transformations were tested on a dataset consisting of 192 field plots of 250 m2 in size located on a gradient from gentle to steep terrain slopes in western Norway. Regression models with predictor variables derived from (1) Procrustean transformed- and (2) histogram matched point clouds were compared to models with variables derived from untransformed point clouds. Models for timber volume, basal area, dominant height, Lorey’s mean height, basal area weighted mean diameter, and number of stems were assessed. The results indicate that both (1) Procrustean transformation and (2) histogram matching can be used to counter crown distortion in ALS point clouds. Furthermore, both techniques are simple and can easily be implemented in the traditional processing chain of ALS metrics extraction
